May 20, Artist Tour with Skip Snow, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Join us for an interactive walking tour with Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Skip Snow as he traces the development of his practice and highlights works currently on display at the Deering Spring Contemporary Platform 450 Exhibit.Participants will be invited to slow down and experience the world at a different pace, ideally the three miles-per-hour pace of a walker. Tales of a Walking Driftographer will explain Skip’s multidisciplinary practice as an artist who walks and studies driftology, his term for the study of items that move with currents. He will guide us to the mangrove boardwalk, present found objects, and will examine the political, social, and cultural currents that brought them to our shores.
Snow will trace the development of his residency project, “Walking with Satellites,” from 2015 through his works on display at the Platform 450 Exhibit. Tour his five “Matter Out of Place” banners, installed along the mangrove boardwalk and discover “Lost Soles: Forgotten Spaces,” within the normally-hidden Richmond Cottage kitchen staircase. Follow his plastic clean-ups, actions and collections on Instagram #WalkingCameFirst.
Cultural Arts Curator Kim Yantis will join the tour and offer context for Skip’s work within the current exhibition and the overall Residency program.
Please RSVP to this free event at Eventbrite.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The tour will meet at the Deering Estate Main Gate and proceed to the Mangrove Boardwalk. Comfortable walking shoes, water, and bug spray are recommended.
After the talk, guests are welcome to explore all aspects of the Platform 450 Exhibit as well as the artist’s onsite studio on the east-side of the historic Carriage House.
Cultural Arts Programming is made possible with support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and The Deering Estate Foundation, Inc.
