Artist In Residence

As a connoisseur and art patron, Mr. Deering befriended and often supported financially the work of several key artists. He had close associations to important artists such as John Singer Sargent and Anders Zorn. In fact, Sargent encouraged Mr. Deering to pursue a career in painting. He often sketched and painted portraits of prominent individuals.

Continuing Mr. Deering’s desire to expand access to and awareness of fine crafts and art of his time, the Deering Estate at Cutler offers limited opportunities through our Artist in Residence Program for artists to interact with guests, create, display, and sell art in one of several artist studios located in our Artist Village.  Preference in our jury process is given to those artists who incorporate Traditional American craft into their works of arts, although artists working in all mediums are encouraged to apply. Artists in Residence are able to access and work in a secure artist studio, produce art in a natural and historic setting, sell art out of their studios, and participate in our Art on Loan Program, as well as have the ability to interact with the many visitors of the Estate.
