The Deering Estate at Cutler seeks to continue Charles Deering’s legacy of art patronage by supporting emerging and mid-career artists who work in a multitude of disciplines and media. The prestigious Artist in Residence Program is housed in our Artist Village buildings, The Carriage House and Pump House and is a direct extension of this legacy.

The Artist in Residency program currently welcomes professional Visual, Performing, and Literary Artists who are self-motivated and focused. The primary basis for selection of our artists is the strength and quality of the applicant’s work as well as a clear objective for the time of their residency. Both Artist in Residence Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies are available and are competitively selected through a jury process using leading professionals from our family of galleries, collaborative arts and cultural organizations. The Residency acts as wonderful incubator for creative ideas, unique experiences, and collaborative opportunities that engage the public.

As evident from our Artist in Residence Alumni, the Deering Estate at Cutler Artist in Residence Program has been a catalyst for artistic practice and recognition including additional residencies, national and local grants, gallery representation, collection acquisitions, and community engagement. Literary Artists in our program can pursue their artistic discipline, create a body of work, and connect with other artists, while interacting with the historic, archeological and natural elements of the Estate’s inspiring environment. As a cultural arts organization we are very proud of the role that our program has had in our artists’ careers, the positive measurable interactions with the public, and even in our growing cultural partnerships. We have had the privilege of presenting and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists, composers, musicians, playwrights, authors, and performers.

Two types of residencies are available to Visual, Performing, and Literary Artists:

(A) Studio Artist in Residence Program, deadline April 15, annually
Application Residency award lengths may vary and application indicates artist preference and availability.

(B) Non-Studio Project Residencies- reviewed bi-annually
Project Residency applications should outline specific goals for interaction with the Estate and are not intended to be exhibition proposals.

All applicants must complete a formal application to be considered.
