Youth Volunteers

Volunteer service demonstrates a strong work ethic and sense of community involvement that can help distinguish your college or employment application from others with similar GPAs and testing scores. 

Do you have great writing, artistic, or computer skills? Are you planning to major in education, museum science, or environmental studies? Do you like spending time outdoors? Whatever your interests are, the Deering Estate at Cutler has opportunities for you to develop and enhance your job skills in one of the most beautiful settings in Miami-Dade County. Earn community service credit for graduation and build your resume by volunteering at the Estate.


VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

Youth applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 20. Please bring your completed Volunteer Application and a Letter of Recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, employer, etc. to the Main Gate Ticket Booth. The booth is open daily from 10:00am to 4:00pm. 


Junior Naturalist Training (Mandatory for all summer camp volunteers)

The Junior Naturalist program is a four to five day training course that encourage youth to take an active role in environmental stewardship and education and prepares them to serve as peer mentors. The course includes certifications in American Red Cross First Aid and Adult/Child CPR in addition to an introduction to basic canoeing, South Florida ecosystems, and Leave No Trace. Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited, so please register early to secure placement. $188 for five-weeks.

Living Classroom

The Deering Estate at Cutler's Living Classroom serves as a community educational enrichment center, providing a hands-on introduction to the environmental sciences, art, history, and archaeology. Living Classroom children's educational programs, Book Nook by the Bay, birthday parties and summer camp. Responsible youth volunteers are integral to the success and quality of these programs and are engaged to set up and clean up during activities; to help ensure the safety of participants; and to assist with classroom presentations and laboratory experiments. They may also use their technical and artistic talents in the creation of educational materials and brochures. Weekday, afterschool, and weekend opportunities are available. Participating individuals must enjoy working with children, come to the Estate prepared to participate in any of our planned activities, and display a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Youth assisting with summer camp must satisfactorily complete Junior Naturalist Training.
