When the weather cools off, our outdoor horizons expand! Every Saturday and Sunday, October through May, the following specialty tours will replace the daily natural areas tour at 12:30 pm. These special feature tours are free with park admission, so return often and truly appreciate the unique natural resources conserved at the Deering Estate.
Pine Rockland Trail Hike
Offered the 1st & 3rd weekend of the month
There are only an estimated 4000 acres of Pine Rocklands left in the world. The Deering Estate at Cutler preserves one of the largest blocks of these globally endangered habitats remaining in the United States. On this specialized tour, walk with the Estate’s naturalists through slash pines and an incredibly diverse understory of shrubby and herbaceous vegetation. You will see numerous endangered plant and animal species that live in this area – some are included on the federally endangered list.
Offered the 2nd & 4th weekend of the month
Charles Deering installed an extensive fire-suppression system throughout the tropical hardwood hammock and pine rocklands. Come hike alongside this antique pipeline, through the original Deering flow-way, an ancient slough and beautiful limestone formations. This trail does flood due to seasonal rainfall and slough-flow, so feet may get wet during this hike. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes and pack an extra pair of shoes and socks!
Other, specialty tours are offered in addition to the thematic weekend Natural Areas tours. These programs are fee-based and tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to contact our Ticket Office at (305) 235-1668 ext. 233.

South Florida is the most truly tropical region in the United States, with habitats, flora, and fauna found nowhere else in the country. Are you anxious to cross the thick-billed vireo, mangrove cuckoo, or white-crowned pigeon off your life list? These are just 3 of the more than 170 species that can be found at the Deering Estate.
The Deering Estate is part of the Biscayne Bay IBA – Important Bird Area – recognized as a globally important habitat for the conservation of bird populations. Within our 444 acres are Pine Rockland, Mangrove Forests and Tropical Hardwood Hammocks. These environments attract everything from migrating songbirds in fall and spring, to specialty summer residents and even the occasional Caribbean vagrant. Wildlife viewing is not limited to birds; river otters, American crocodiles and manatees are common sights as well in the surrounding bay waters.
Offered on the 4th Saturday (June – September)
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Guests meet at the Richmond Cottage porch, facing the water.
Free with regular Estate admission: $12 for adults, $7 for children (ages 4-14); Free for Deering Estate Foundation Members.
